Former US Vice-President Joe Biden has declared his intention to run for president in 2020. He made his announcement in a three-and-a-half-minute video posted this morning on his official Twitter account.
In his announcement, Biden recalled President Donald Trump’s much criticized response to the deadly Charlottesville white nationalist riots of 2017, saying the US was in a battle for the soul of this nation. Mr Biden warned that the core values of the nation the democracy and everything that has made America what it is, is at stake.
Biden’s announcement ends more than two years of speculation about whether he would launch a White House bid for the 2020 election, dating to President Donald Trump’s victory over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in November 2016.
The 76-year-old political veteran joins a large and diverse field of more than a dozen Democrats who have either signaled their intentions to run for president or have launched their campaigns; this includes Senators Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, and Bernie Sanders.
