In commemoration of the International Fact-Checking Day, Nigerians have been enjoined on the importance of fact-checking information before disseminating to the public.
The International Fact-Checking Day is observed on April 2, and initiated in 2017 to protect the general public from misinformation or ‘fake news. The international fact-checking day is to enlighten the public on how they should fact check information.
While speaking with Royal Times, some Nigerian youths who narrated how they get access to information, also explained why they do not fact-check information.
“I check information from opera mini and the one that are important is what I tell others. I don’t fact check the information at all”
“ I get information from Whatsapp, Tiktok and Instagram just to know what is happening”
Commemorating on the day, the Executive director of Africa Check, Noko Makgato explains the importance of fact-checking information.
“Fact checking is important because of what it does it holds those in power to account for the things that they make and it is also an important opportunity for people to educate about the fact on key issues”
He also urged journalists to display their duties professionally to avoid the dissemination of fake news in the public.
