The House of Representatives on Tuesday moved to reverse the planned amendment of the Code of Conduct Bereau and Tribunal Act by the Senate. The Senate had already concluded process of amending the CCB/Tribunal Act.
Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Tuesday called for the reversal of the amendments which he said contradicts the constitution.
Gbajabiamila also said Section 15(4) of the 5th Schedule to the constitution provided that the National Assembly should give additional powers to the CCT, stating that the new amendment reduces its powers.
He said; “The President shall approve the appointment of the Chairman of the CCB, which already stated clearly the procedure.”
“An amendment to the CCB Act cannot be inconsistent with the provisions of the constitution. As we know, the constitution is the supreme law of the land.
“Any law that goes in conflict with the constitution, it is taken for granted that the constitution will naturally take its stand”.
A substantive motion to rescind the bill would be debated next week by the House on whether the reversal will succeed.
