A former Commissioner in Kwara State and one time member of the State Assembly, Honourable Ramat Adesina-Abaya, has said active participation in politics is not an excuse for women to fail in home management.
Abaya said it is possible to manage the home front properly and still be actively involved in politics.
She spoke on Thursday at a sensitization on Political participation and decision making organized for out-of-school girls. The sensitization was organized by Nuhu Fatimoh, NUFAT, foundation with support from Global Affairs Canada and Action Aid.
The notable female Kwara politician said any woman in politics must know she’s there for a purpose, pursue that purpose, plan her time, and leave at the appropriate time to attend to her home.
While asking women to carry their spouses along always, she cautioned against just participating in politics with no clear cut purpose, or just staying at venue of political activities all day doing nothing or waiting for just a penny.
Also speaking, a former Senior Special Assistant to the Governor and House of Assembly aspirant, Hajia Maryam Abdulahi, charged women to support one another to excel in politics.
She lamented that women over the years have been found not to give the necessary support to their fellow women. Hajia Abdulahi however, called for a change of attitude.
The former aide to the Governor also rubbished the assertion that women who are in politics are wayward, saying that such assertion is not only false, but uncalled for.
“If you say that, are you saying women who have committed themselves well and served in various capacities such as Special Assistants, Commissioners, Ministers or lawmakers are wayward? Of course not,” she argued.
She also called for proper understanding between women and their husbands so as not to jeopardize their home for successful political career.
Also speaking, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and party’s Senatorial Chairman, Kwara central, Alhaji Jimoh Adesina, said having identified the impact women have in governance, nothing must stop them from enjoying the support they deserve in terms of political participation.
“Women have compassion and they are very loyal anywhere you find them. In fact, you hardly find a woman where there’s criminality. This is why they are best for the task at hand,” he said.
The Chief Executive Officer, Nuhu Fatimoh foundation, Dr Asiat Ayinke Saka, who has also held several political offices, said the project is to ensure that more women get involved in active politics, especially as 2023 General election approaches.
She charged all present to ensure they take advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration, CVRs, exercise to get their voter’s card and start taking active part in decision making from their wards.
