The Congress of Nigerian Universities Academics (CONUA) has detached itself from the ongoing strike in Nigerian Universities as a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
This was disclosed in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, NIYI SUNMONU, and the National Publicity Secretary, ERNEST NWOKE, that the union reiterated that it was not a part of the decision to embark on the ongoing strike by ASUU.
The union who also announced its independence as a union of academics in Nigerian universities noted that the Congress of University Academics has never been part of the decision to embark on the industrial action which has paralysed academic activities IN Public universities for over five months
Meanwhile, the detached association called on the government to rapidly register the union in order to provide a more robust platform for academics with alternative, realistic and more sustainable views to operate and engage with the government.
It could be recalled that the Nigeria Labour Congress has scheduled next week Tuesday, July 26 and Wednesday 27 for a nationwide protest in solidarity with the striking members of the ASUU and other unions in the public universities.
