As part of efforts to build their capacity and enhance their humanitarian services as community based organizations, CBOs particularly in the protection of women and girls right, Global Hope for Women and Children Foundation, (GLOHWOC) , held a two-day training on organizational effectiveness and Board Governance.
The two-day workshop held in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, was supported by Global Affairs Canada and ActionAid Nigeria.
Chief Executive Officer, GLOHWOC, Mrs Christiana Abayomi-Oluwole said the training is to foster interaction among CBOs’ board members, the CEOs and Programme officers, to equip the board with knowledge and skills that will assist them in carrying out their obligations and ensuring compliance to statutory regulations.

“The CBOs involved in the Women’s Voice and Leadership Nigeria Project are being trained to get strengthened to become more effective in their operations.”
“We want the management to be able to work with board members so they know the clear roles expected of them. Up until now, we realized both Board members do not even align with the mission, vision, goals and values of the organizations.
“They are just there in most cases as figure heads and rubber stamp. We want to ensure that the board are more visible and communicate more with the management team.”
Abayomi-Oluwole also said the capacity-building training will help them access funding opportunities.
“Most of the laws and legal framework, some of the CBOs do not even know the requirement, or the laws binding them, we want them to be very aware of this, so that the provisions will be taken into cognizance.”
The training, she said will also “help the CBOs to take ownership and make them to be more agile in taking up responsibilities, operate with best practices and serve society better.

“This is not the first training. We have previously trained them in other areas especially in the areas of Programme Management, Financial Management, and Feminist Programming.
“We hope later to extend the training to areas of Monitoring and Evaluation, Report Writing and Resource Mobilization. This will make the organisations to be sustainable, and better positioned to be able to get more fundings and touch more lives,” the GLOHWOC CEO said.
Board members and CEOs, expressed gratitude to GLOHWOC, for the two-day capacity building, which had not only improve their administrative skills for the Women’s Voice and leadership Nigeria project, but also position them well for brighter project supports from donors.
Hajia Awwal Aliyu, Board Chairperson, Waaru-Suuru Community Organisation, Ilesa Baruba, said the training has helped to bring synergy between them as board members and the management.
“Most CBOs didn’t even have boards before now, because some graduated from Co-operative Societies. But now, they do. We also know the clear-cut duties of each and the rules guiding our operations.”
On the Women’s Voice and leadership Nigeria project, Awwal said the project has helped women in her local government to be more involved and active in politics and governance.
“Before now, you cannot even talk in the political arena. There were also very few women in politics, and they were handpicked. They don’t have voice, other than to do what they are asked to do. But now, things have changed.
Another Board member with Omuaran Women Forum, said the session has helped her “as a person to understand my duties more and also more knowledge about how to go about our operations.
