The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the death of six persons who were killed following attacks by bandits on Dan Sabau, Makera and Pawwa villages in Kankara Local Government Area.
There were, however, reports that the casualty figure may be higher, as several people were still missing, while several others sustained injuries during the attack.
Bandits had attacked communities in Kankara and Danmusa council areas a couple of days ago, where no fewer than 10 persons were killed. It was also learnt that cattle and other domestic animals were rustled in the Kankara incident.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the state police command, SP Gambo Isah, said upon receiving a distress call, police moved to the area and engaged the bandits in a battle.
Besides, Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari has charged security agencies to ensure protection and safety of corps members posted to the state on compulsory one-year service.
Masari also called on council area heads and traditional rulers to collaborate with security agents to ensure that corps members serve in an atmosphere devoid of security challenges.
The governor, who was represented by Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youths and Sports development, Hussaini Dangani, stated this yesterday at the closing ceremony of orientation for Batch B, Stream 1 corps members in the state.
However, a patrol team of 1 Division Nigerian Army on Exercise Harbin Kunama Lll has neutralised a bandit and rescued 13 kidnap victims in Kuyello Community, a suburb of Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
A statement by Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Ezindu Idimah, said the troops received a distress call indicating abduction of some farmers and sent a patrol team from Super Camp Kuyello, which pursed the kidnappers and rescued all 13 farmers after a fierce exchange of fire.
Meanwhile, a Southern and Middle Belt Coalition under the auspices of Citizens Against Tyranny (CAT), has threatened to ensure that any form of intimidation or violence against Southern Nigerian peoples in the North would be met with equal resistance. While calling for the arrest of Northern youths who issued a 30-day ultimatum to governors who opposed to the RUGA settlement programme, the group said it would not fold its arms and wait to be maimed or killed under any guise.
In a statement yesterday, they urged the Federal Government to focus on how to end the escalating violence in the country and provide security for Nigerians instead of fixating on herders’ welfare against the wellbeing of other Nigerians.
