Mr. Michael Clement Atowari, an Ophthalmologist and a retired Controller of Medical Services in the Old Rivers State, has died at the age of 97.His death was announced at the weekend by his son Atedo Peterside, founder, Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria Plc.
The banker said immediately after his father returned to Nigeria as a young British-trained medical doctor, he was deployed to Lagos to prove his mettle before being sent to the North-Bauchi/Jos and then he was transferred to the then Eastern Nigeria by the British.
“This also explains why his three children were born in Lagos, Jos and Port-Harcourt (the old three regions) in that order.
“My two sisters are older than me and so I was the one that was born in Port-Harcourt.
“My father was transferred to many different cities thereafter and he later specialised in Opthalmology.
“He was placed on drip for less than 24 hours before he passed on. At age 97, instead of grieving, I am truly thankful,” Peterside added.
