Stop paying ransom to kidnappers – IG of Police warns victims’ families

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase has urged Nigerians to stop paying ransoms to kidnappers but rather provide adequate information to the police to enable them do their jobs.Solomon Arase

He stated this yesterday at the start of a five-day counter-kidnap seminar organised by the British High Commission, with instructors drawn from United Kingdom Anti-kidnapping Agency and the Swiss Crisis Management Unit.

The IGP, who restated his commitment to continue driving reforms and strategic transformation of the Force in order to reposition for efficiency and effectiveness in its service delivery, warned against payment of ransom to kidnappers by victims’ families.

He explained that the seminar was being organised to boost the capabilities of the Nigeria Police, particularly now that the country is battling with the menace of kidnapping across the country, adding that the programme was in furtherance of the Nigeria Police Force efforts at addressing the current security challenges in the country.

The facilitators led by John Branney of the National Crime Agency – UK and Matthias Herter of Swiss Crisis Management Unit promised to deliver the training using United Nation’s kidnap manual which is used in Europe and other parts of the world.

They expressed optimism that the workshop will tremendously benefit officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force.
