The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has disagreed with the recent statement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the strike by university lecturers could jeopardize the 2019 elections.
The chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, Festus Okoye, had on Thursday said the lingering strike by the lecturers will have serious impact on preparations for the conduct of the 2019 general elections as some of its adhoc staff are drawn from the higher institution.
The union said it found the statement highly unfortunate and unbecoming of the national electoral umpire and notes that such unguarded statement has a tendency to erode the confidence of Nigerians in the 2019 elections and is a threat to democracy in itself.
The spokesperson of SSANU, Abdussobur Salaam, however said the lecturers that are picked as INEC adhoc staff are not picked on the altar of ASUU and participation as adhoc staff of INEC should never been seen as a union activity.
While calling on the federal government to speedily resolve the issues in contention with the striking lecturers, the union consequently demanded that such statement be retracted in the interest of the nation’s democracy.
