Police commission to meet on fate of 10,000 constables

Police commission to meet on fate of 10,000 constables

The Police Service Commission says it will meet to determine the fate of 10,000 constables recruited last year by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

The meeting would also discuss the ongoing constables’ recruitment exercise being carried out by the police.

This followed the Wednesday judgment of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, which said that the commission had the constitutional powers to appoint persons into the Nigeria Police Force.

The order set aside an earlier Federal High Court ruling to the contrary.

The IGP had last Friday notified the commission of his intention to appeal to the Supreme Court.

But the PSC spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement on Monday, said the commission viewed the judgment as “victory for the rule of law and has always believed in the supremacy of the law.”

“The commission is happy with the judgment and will continue to work with the Nigeria Police Force for the collective good of the nation,” it added.

The commission in the statement titled, ‘Appeal Court judgment: PSC to meet on 2019/20 constables recruitment,’ said it has received several calls on the fate of the 2019 and the ongoing 2020 recruitment into the constable cadre of the police already declared null and void by the judgment.

“The commission will soon meet to take a decision on the implications of the judgment and the way forward. It will continue to ensure that its operations are guided by established laws,” the statement noted.
