The local government chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Kwara state has lamented the increase in death toll of its members; saying about one hundred and twenty pensioners died recently which increased the death toll to one thousand seven hundred and twenty.
The union attributed the crisis to non-payment of pension and gratuities by the state government.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the state secretariat of the union in Ilorin, the state chairman of the union, Aliru Mohammed said the local government and local education authority pensioners are owed fifty billion naira arrears of gratuity and two point seven billion naira pension arrears.
The union accused the state government of deliberate action of non-implementation of twenty percent harmonization of year 2010 salary increase to local government and local government education authority pensioners as put in place by the immediate past Governor of the state Doctor Abubakar Bukola saraki.
While explaining that pensioners in the state are currently owed seven month salary arrears, the union seeks the intervention of the senate president Bukola Saraki, the state house of assembly and royal fathers towards payment of their pension and gratuities arrears
Six representatives were selected from each local government to represent the interest of all local government pensioners in the state.
