The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has condemned what it described as slow and unprofessional approach adopted by the federal government disaster response agency, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to the massive flood that occurred in Benue State.
In a statement issued yesterday by the Head of Publicity Unit, Chinwe Nnorom, the opposition party urged both the states and federal governments to be more proactive by taking adequate steps to put in place mechanisms that would curtail such level of disaster in other flood prone areas across the country.
The devastating flood disaster which hit Benue State over a week ago displaced more than one hundred thousand people, ravaged over two thousand homes and destroyed hectares of farm lands.
President Muhammadu Buhari few days after the flood directed NEMA to immediately mobilise personnel and resources to the aid of the victims of the flooding promising to closely monitor the situation and will receive regular updates. PDP sympathized with the government and people of the state.
Meanwhile, the state government has said that it will need the Federal Government to release more ecological funds to it in order to successfully combat flooding in the state.
