The League Management Committee (LMC) has suspended the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) until further notice over the outbreak of the COVID-19.
In a tweet on Wednseday evening after the midweek matches, the LMC said “#NPFL20 has been suspended till further notice in line with global health preventive protocol against the Coronavirus (COVID 19)”
In a further statement, the LMC said the move is in line with global preventive measures against the pandemic. “In suspending remaining league matches, the League Management Company (LMC) said it would review the decision after consulting the nation’s health authorities, namely, the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).”
“Matchday 25 fixtures were concluded on Wednesday and the LMC said the decision was to conform with the guidelines for containment of the spread of the global pandemic.”
Initial reports had suggested that the league body could opt to allow matches to go on behind closed doors in order to conclude the season and align its calendar with Europe’s footballing calendar.
However, Nigeria confirmed five new cases of the novel Coronavirus, on Wednesday, with the country introducing travel restrictions to some countries.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had earlier suspended all football activities in the country for four weeks due to the outbreak of the disease.
On Wednesday, Matchday 25 fixtures were played across 10 stadia as league leaders, Plateau United picked up three points to maintain their four points lead at the summit of the table.
