You can call Lil Nas X by your name, or you can call him your 2021 Video of the Year winner.
The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards held in New York City on Sunday and was hosted by rapper Doja Cat.
Also known as the MTV VMAs, this year’s edition saw the 22-year-old rapper winning the most coveted prize at the award show for “Montero: Call Me By Your Name.”
“First I wanna say thank you to the gay agenda,” Lil Nas X shouted during his acceptance speech. “Let’s go gay agenda!”
The “Montero” music video made headlines after its premiere for its depiction of Lil Nas X sliding on a stripper pole to hell, where he proceeds to give Satan a lap dance.
“Montero,” which also won the VMAs for best direction and best visual effects, was created by Ukrainian music video director Tanu Muino and Lil Nas X himself. The artist cited inspiration from the gay romance at the center of André Aciman’s novel turned 2017 film, “Call Me By Your Name.”
The song is noted for its queer themes, including its sexually explicit homosexual lyrics. The music video received criticism from conservative commentators in the United States, some of whom deemed it immoral or harmful to children. Nonetheless, the song debuted at No.1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The rapper’s second number-one hit on the chart after “Old Town Road”. It was certified platinum in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on April 22, 2021.
The altered Nike Air Max 97 shoes accompanying the song’s release were dubbed the Satan Shoes and caused Nike to file a lawsuit against the company that produced them.
