The Senate on Tuesday, rejected the confirmation of Lauretta Onochie, the former Aide to the Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, as the National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The rejection on Tuesday followed the massive objection that has trailed her nomination, especially from members of the opposition and civil society organisations who claim she is a card-carrying member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)
Onochie collected nomination from President Muhammadu Buhari for the position of national commissioner of INEC for October 2020. However, she insisted that since President Buhari won his second term, she has removed herself from all things political.
Kabiru Gaya, Chairman of the Committee, in his report said Onochie did not satisfy the provisions of the Federal Character Principles.
The Senate at the committee of the whole subsequently voted against her nomination.
