The House of Representatives on Thursday has taken step to suspend the implementation of the Hajj Saving Scheme following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance by the Representative of the All Progressives Congress Katsina, Aminu Ashiru-Mani (APC-Katsina) at the plenary in Abuja.
The house mandated its Committee on Pilgrims Affairs to investigate the hajj savings scheme, within two weeks review the entire agreement between National Hajj Commission of Nigeria NAHCON and JA’IZ Bank and report back.
Explaining the essence of the scheme, Aminu said the scheme was established in 2006 for intending Muslim pilgrims to save toward performing the Hajj, adding that within two years of the partnership the customer base has hit over four thousand with no billion naira savings in the account.
He, however, reportedly alleged lack of transparency and accountability in the savings scheme, saying if the development is not tackled, it will lead to corruption in the system and disregard for the extant law.
In his remark, the Deputy Speaker of the house, Ahmed Wase, said for more than two years, intending pilgrims had been contributing to the scheme, but unable to perform the Hajj due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, while allegeding the commission of dipping its hand into the fund.
