hugo-chavezThe Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, was in delicate condition after suffering complications from another cancer operation, Vice President Nicolas Maduro said.

The vice president travelled to the Cuban capital on Saturday to meet with Chavez and his medical team after a fourth round of surgery in a year and a half.

“The health of President Chavez continues to be delicate, presenting complications that are being treated but not without risks,’’ said Maduro, who is currently acting president.

Uncertainty over the president’s health has kept Venezuela’s political future in suspense. He was operated on December 11 in Havana for an undisclosed type of pelvic cancer that was detected last year.

His unscheduled return to the island raised the possibility for the first time that he may not be able to continue in power that he has held since 1999.

Chavez was scheduled to be sworn in for another six-year mandate on January 10 after winning recent re-election. He publicly acknowledged the risks he faced before leaving for Cuba in early December and designated Maduro as his successor, exhorting Venezuelans to vote for him if a new election becomes necessary.
