BREAKING: Senate threatens showdown, ask Osinbajo to remove Magu

Lawmakers say they would no longer entertain any request for confirmation of any nominee until the acting president respects the rejection of Mr Magu.

The Senate on Tuesday demanded that the acting President Yemi Osinbajo must obey the resolutions of the Senate, including the immediate removal of the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

It also suspended all confirmation of appointments until compliance with its resolution.

Protests came from the lawmakers when a letter from Osinbajo asking the Senate to confirm the nomination of Mr. Lanra Gbajabiamila as Chairman of the National Lottery Commission, which was read by President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, at the plenary.

Following a point of order by Senator Ahmed Sani, drew the attention of lawmakers to remarks allegedly made by Acting President Osinbajo that the Senate has no powers to confirm nominees apart from ministerial and ambassadorial nominees.
While strongly condemning Osinbajo for the comment, the lawmakers successively asked that an embargo should be placed on confirmation of executive appointments pending the time the powers of the legislature had been recognised.

While threatening that legislators might move against the leadership of the Senate if it failed to take a drastic action against the executive in 48 hours, the lawmakers asked that invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to any member be ignored.
