Armed bandits attacked villages around Gandi in Rabah Local Government of Sokoto State, killing an unspecified number of people. Also some villages in the area were razed by the attackers and residents displaced.
Police Public Relations Officer, Sokoto Police Command, Cordelia Nwewe, said that the Commissioner of Police, Muritala Mani and the medical personnel from the state had moved to Rabah to assess the situation and ascertain how many people were affected.
Nwewe said further information would be communicated soon.
The latest attack comes as the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, noted that killings of policemen by criminals have strengthened the argument that the nation’s security architecture needed to be overhauled.
The governor who described as worrisome a situation where policemen, who had the constitutional duty of protecting citizens, were themselves being killed by criminals, added that the pervading insecurity in the country is blamable on failed leadership.
While lamenting over the killing of policemen in Sokoto and other states including the federal capital territory, Governor Tambuwal stressed the need to review the security strategy in the country.
