Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has resigned after nearly four months of demonstrations against his autocratic thirty-year rule. Sudan’s state-controlled television today reported that the army announced the formation of a transitional council.
The transitional council will headed by Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf, the First Vice President and Defense Minister of Sudan. Thousands of residents of Khartoum poured into the streets of the Sudanese capital and marched to the headquarters of the country’s military, where protesters have staged a sit-in since last Saturday.
The Sudanese Professionals Association, which has spearheaded the protests, said they will only accept the handover of power to a civilian transitional government.
The protests began on the nineteenth of December, with demonstrators accusing al-Bashir’s government of economic mismanagement that has sparked skyrocketing food prices, and fuel and foreign currency shortages.
