3 Unilag students arraigned over alleged N10, 500 theft, phones worth N506,000

Three University of Lagos Students were on Thursday charged before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly robbing their fellow students of N10, 500 cash and phones valued at N506, 000. They were, however, admitted to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties each in like sum. UNILAG

The students — Micheal Onwuameze (27), Henry Ngene (22) and Adetayo Adekoya (25) – did not have their addresses stated. The accused are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing. The prosecutor, Insp. Roman Unuigbe , told the court that the offences were committed on Jan. 25 at about 8:40 p.m. at the Sport Centre Pavilion, University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos.

He alleged that the accused entered into the Pavilion and attacked the students using axes to rob them of their valuables. “They forcefully collected N10, 500 cash and cell phones valued at N506, 000.

“The accused were apprehended at the second gate of the campus and the items and cash were recovered from them,’’ Unuigbe said. The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 285, 295 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-charge preferred against them.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 provides for a term of three -year imprisonment for convicted offenders. The Magistrate, Mr P.A. Ojo, ordered that their sureties must reside in Lagos and should be gainfully employed. He adjourned the case to March 14, for substantive trial.
