The Nuhu Fatimoh Foundation, NUFAT, has charged the Kwara State Government to build on the progress made in time past to ensure compliance with the 35% affirmation for women participation in leadership and governance.
The NGO made the call on Wednesday, June 22, when the NUFAT team paid an advocacy visit to the Commissioner for Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajia Mopelola AbdulMalik-Bashir at her office, in Ilorin.
The advocacy visit, facilitated by NUFAT, in collaboration with ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) was part of activities under the Women Voice and Leadership Project (WVL).
Speaking during the visit, the Chief Executive Officer, NUFAT foundation, Dr Asiat Ayinke Saka, commended the Commissioner for her devotion towards women projects even before her appointment as Commissioner.
She lauded her for standing as a voice for the female gender and charged her not to rest on her oars especially “at this period when women are needed to occupy elective positions as the nation awaits the 2023 elections.”
The former Commissioner charged Hajia AbdulMalik to use her office to make sure that the interest of the women is protected at all times.
In her own words, Hajia AbdulMalik appreciated the NUFAT delegation for partnering the ministry and in extension, the Kwara state government in the project of raising women participation in politics and decision making.
She expressed concern that the female gender had in time past been relegated to the background, but added that efforts are in place to change the narrative.
According to her, the Kwara State Government under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, values the women and that is why he reserved their place in his government.
She assured that the Governor will always do more for the women, adding that efforts are being put in place to make the 35% affirmative action is again achieved.
Highlight of the courtesy call was presentation of gifts to the Commissioner by Dr Saka who was accompanied by other members of the NGO.
