The need for Nigerians to adopt a cycling culture was the focus as enthusiasts and cyclists in Ilorin,Kwara state capital ,North central Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark World Bicycle Day.
With collaborations between Federal Road Safety Corps Kwara sector command, Nigeria Cycling Federation and Kwara State University (KWASU) through the Center for Wellness and Creative Arts Therapy ,the cycling activity held in line with the theme “Cycling for Earth and Humanity”.
Addressing reporters during the flag-off of the event at the premises of Kwara Sector Command of the FRSC, the Sector Commander Fredrick Ade Ogidan said the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) has been in fore-front creating awareness on the need for bicycle riding among Nigerians with attendant tremendous advantage attached.
“We call on motorists to respect those who are riding bicycles, cyclists are also major road users, we must ensure their safety when they ride without obstructions .
“In future road construction, we call on government to create bicycle paths so that people will feel free to ride bicycles “
Also Speaking at the event ,Director of Center for wellness and creative Arts Therapy Dr. Khadijat Toyin Musa expressed joy sighting the magnanimity of Professor Mohammed Mustapha Akanbi (SAN) Vice chancellor of Kwara State University ,Malete who graciously granted opportunity to be part of the celebration.
“We pride ourselves to be the green university for community development and entrepreneurship so you can see that we are in good direction.
“We have tracks for cyclists in KWASU and we encourage students to ride as a means of transportation on campus.We also encourage Nigerians to own and ride bicycles to sustain a healthy lifestyle while enhancing positivity as far as climate change is concerned”
The event witnessed cyclists riding from Lao along Airport road, in Ilorin kwara State Capital through Airport road, Gerin- Alimi under -pass road and back to the premises of Federal Road Safety Corps ,Kwara sector command, Ilorin Kwara state.
The United Nations had on the 12th of April 2018, at a resolution unanimously held by all one hundred and ninety-three member states of the UN General Assembly, declared the 3rd of June every year as World Bicycle day.
