A Federal High Court on Tuesday ordered the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that the governments of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, late Umaru Yar’adua and Goodluck Jonathan account fully for all recovered funds.
Justice Mohammed Idris made the order while delivering judgment in a Freedom of Information suit filed by a non-governmental organisation, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).
The Court sitting in Lagos declared that successive governments since the return of democracy in 1999 breached the fundamental Principles of Transparency and Accountability for failing to disclose details about the spending of looted but recovered stolen public funds.
SERAP’s Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, also said that the onus was now on the Accountant General of the Federation working closely with the Central Bank of Nigeria and other relevant organisations of the government to comply with the court’s order.
